Procedure

To a stirred solution of N-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]urea (6.37 g, 31.2 mmol), 4-cyanobenzaldehyde (4.09 g, 31.2 mmol) and 5-methylhexane-2,4-dione (4.0 g, 31.2 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (150 ml) is added ethyl polyphosphate (12 g). The mixture is stirred at reflux for 18 hours. After cooling down to room temperature, the solvent is removed in vacuo and the residue is purified by column chromatography on silica with cyclohexane/ethyl acetate as eluent.
