A suspension of 2-chloro-3-(1-cyanocyclopropyl)-N-(2,4-difluoro-5-hydroxyphenyl)benzamide (4.20 g, 12 mmol), 2-chloro-5-nitropyridine (1.9 g, 12 mmol) and potassium carbonate (1.66 g, 12 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (20 mL) was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was poured into water (200 mL), and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (100 mL×2). The ethyl acetate layers were combined, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The insoluble material was filtered off, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The obtained residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane=0/100→50/50), and crystallized from diethyl ether to give the title compound (5.20 g, 92%) as a yellow powder.
