A mixture of 2-(3-amino-phenyl)-3,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (0.52 g, 1.6 mmol), 2-bromo-2-methyl-propionic acid methyl ester (0.58 g, 3.2 mmol) and potassium carbonate (1.1 g, 8 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (6 mL) was stirred at 25° C. for 72 h. Then the reaction mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (2×100 mL), washed with water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo to afford 2-[3-(1-methoxycarbonyl-1-methyl-ethylamino)-phenyl]-3,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (678 mg, 100%) as a brown oil which was used for next step without further purification: LC/MS m/e calcd for C25H32N2O4 (M+H)+: 425.54, observed: 425.2.
