Procedure
2-Hydroxy-5-nitro pyridine (1 g, 7.14 mmol) was added portion wise to 4.5 mL of concentrated HCl under constant stirring and then heated to 50° C. To this was slowly added a solution of sodium chlorate (266 mg, 2.5 mmol) in water (4 mL). The reaction was maintained at the same temperature for an additional hour, and then cooled to 0° C. The precipitate obtained was filtered, washed thoroughly with water and dried to obtain 2-hydroxy-3-chloro-5-nitro pyridine.
