Procedure

4-Hydroxy-6-iodo-1-methyl-1,8-naphthyridin-2(1H)-one. Concentrated aqueous HCl (10 mL) was added to a solution of methyl 4-hydroxy-6-iodo-1-methyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carboxylate (Method 2) (1.00 g, 2.78 mmol) in TFA (10 mL). The mixture was heated at 80° C. for 18 hours. The solvent was removed, and the residue rinsed with water and diethyl ether. The product was dried in a vacuum oven at 50° C. to afford the title compound in 96% yield. 1H-NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 11.84 (1 H, s), 8.82 (1H, d, J=2.3 Hz), 8.43 (1H, d, J=2.3 Hz), 5.89 (1H, s), 3.39 (3 H, s). MS m/z: 303 (M+).
