Procedure

To a solution of 4-bromo-2-cyclohexyl-5-nitro-phenol (1.19 g, 4.0 mmol) and Cs2CO3 (1.54 g, 4.72 mmol) in DMF (10 mL) was added benzyl bromide (1.02 g, 707 μL, 6.0 mmol) dropwise. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature under an inert atmosphere for 2 h. The reaction was quenched with water and the aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc (3×10 mL). The combined organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography using 5% EtOAc/hexane gradient gave 1-(benzyloxy)-4-bromo-2-cyclohexyl-5-nitrobenzene (1.35 g, 87%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.42 (s, 1H), 7.39 (s, 1H), 7.36-7.25 (m, 5H), 5.06 (s, 2H), 2.99-2.93 (m, 1H), 1.79 (d, J=11.5 Hz, 4H), 1.70 (d, J=13.4 Hz, 1H), 1.39-1.14 (m, 5H)
