Procedure

To a solution of 2-Benzyloxymethyl-5-hydroxy-3-methyl-tetrahydro-furan-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (0.48 g, 1.7 mmol) prepared as previously described, in pyridine (5 mL), Acetic Anhydride (0.32 mL, 3.4 mmol) and DMAP (5 mg) were added and the reaction was stirred at room temperature. After 3 h stirring, the reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with 0.5N HCl and brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude residue obtained was purified by column chromatography (EA/Hexanes, 40:60). The product was isolated as a 2.8/1 anomeric mixture.
