Procedure
A mixture of 1-benzyl-2-chloro-6-methoxy-1H-benzoimidazole (600 mg), hydrobromic acid (48%, 11 ml) and glacial acetic acid (6 ml) was heated under reflux for 1 hour. After cooling the mixture was neutralised by addition of 10% sodium bicarbonate solution then extracted 3 times with dichloromethane (30 ml). The combined extracts were dried over magnesium sulfate and then evaporated to give 3-benzyl-2-chloro-3H-benzoimidazol-5-ol (470 mg) as a yellow solid. Mass spectrum: 259 [M+H]+ retention time=3.4 minutes.
