Procedure

A mixture of the phenol prepared in example 91 (0.90 g, 2.2 mmol), 4-bromocaproonitrile (0.6 mL, 5.0 mmol), potassium carbonate (0.97 g, 7.0 mmol), potassium iodide (0.1 g) and mthyl ethyl ketone (30 mL) was heated at reflux for 10 h. The reaction was concentrated in vacuo and the resulting residue partitioned between EtOAc and water. The layers were separated and the aqueous layer extracted with EtOAc (3×). The combined organic layers were washed with water (3×), brine, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated in vacuo to a light pink oil. The material was purified by flash chromatography over silica gel eluting with 5% MeOH/CHCl, to provide 0.80 g (72%) of a clear oil. MS (FD+) 500.78 (MH+). NMR.
