To a solution of 0.5 g (2.5 mmol) of 2-formyl-pyrrolidine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester in anhydrous THF (20 mL) was added 5.0 mL (2.5 mmol) of 4a, and the mixture was stirred at an ambient temperature for 16 hours. The solution was poured over a 1N solution of hydrochloric acid and was extracted with EtOAc (2×100 mL). The organic phase was washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to a clear oil which was subject to column chromatography (EtOAc/Hexanes, 1:3) to yield 0.18 g (16.7%) of 10a as a clear oil. TLC Rf=0.6 (EtOAc/Hexanes, 1:3)
