Procedure

7.0 g (0.01 mol) of 1,3-bis-[2-hydroxy-3-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propyl]-5,5-diethylbarbiturate and 6 g (0.02 mol) of stearic acid chloride in 50 ml of ligroin are brought to the reflux temperature and the resulting clear solution is kept at this temperature until the evolution of hydrochloric acid has ceased. After evaporating the solvent in vacuo, a syrupy residue is obtained which when chromatographed on a silica gel column gives 6.5 g (53% of theory) of 1,3-bis-[2-stearoyloxy-3-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propyl]-5,5-diethylbarbiturate as an almost colourless oil.
