Acetylene is introduced for 30 minutes into a 20°-22° C mixture of 118 ml. of tetrahydrofuran and 16.8 g. of potassium-tert.butylate, and thereafter 22.7 g. of 4-nitro-benzophenone are added to the mixture. The introduction of acetylene is continued at 20° to 22° C for an additional 30 minutes, then the mixture is neutralized with 5 n hydrochloric acid under nitrogen atmosphere. The organic phase is separated, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent is distilled off in vacuo. 23.1 g. (91%) of 4-nitro-α-ethynyl-benzhydrol are obtained; m.p.: 88°-89° C.
