Procedure
270 parts of β-naphthol, 175 parts of aniline and 5 parts of triphenyl phosphite are mixed and fused at 130° C. The reaction commences at an internal temperature of 190° C, with elimination of water. After 2 1/2 hours, internal temperature has reached 235° C and 34 parts of water have distilled off. 398 parts of N-phenyl-β-naphthylamine of melting point 100° - 102° are distilled, passing over at 230° C/15 mm Hg. This corresponds to a yield of 97% of theory.
