Procedure
3-(2-Carbethoxy-ethyl)-4-methyl-5-carbethoxypyrrole (0.4 g (35)), 5ml of hydriodic acid, 5 ml of acetic acid, 1 ml of hypophosphorous acid and 0.23 ml of propionaldehyde were reacted as above. The solution was poured into 60 ml of water which was then brought to pH 5 with ammonia. The precipitate (of the partially hydrolyzed product) was esterified in 5 ml of 5% ethanolic HCl. The solvent was evaporated and the residue was distilled then recrystallized from pentane (0.1 g), m.p. 61.5°-63.5° C (lit. 63° - 64° C.).
