Procedure

A solution of 2-(5-methoxy-1H-indol-3-yl)-1-(toluene-4-sulfonyl)-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine [6.6 g, Reference Example 12(a)] in dimethylformamide (100 mL), under a nitrogen atmosphere, was treated with sodium hydride (700 mg, 60% dispersion in oil). After stirring at ambient temperature for 30 minutes the mixture was treated dropwise with ethyl chloroacetate (2.0 mL, 23.75 mmol) and stirring was continued for an additional 4 hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic phase was washed with brine, then dried over sodium sulfate and then evaporated to give the title compound (5.77 g) as a yellow solid, MS: 504(MH+). HPLC (METHOD A):: RT=11.88 minutes.
