A solution of 4-bromo-2-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-benzofuran-5-ol 130 (0.100 g, 0.32 mmol) and copper (I) bromide (0.047 g, 0.32 mmol) in DMF (4 mL) was treated with sodium methoxide (0.73 mL, 3.2 mmol, 25% by weight in MeOH) and heated at 150° C. for three hours under a nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction was quenched at room temperature with 1 N HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×). The combined organic extracts were washed once with a saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, then dried over magnesium sulfate and filtered. Then the material was purified by column chromatography using 30% ethyl acetate in hexane as the eluent to yield 132 (0.030 g, 36.6%) as a brown solid: Mp. 165-168° C.; 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 7.72 (d, 2 H, J=8.6 Hz), 7.23 (s, 1 H), 7.1 (d, 1 H, J=8.7 Hz), 6.86 (d, 2 H, J=8.6 Hz), 6.76 (d, 1 H, J=8.6 Hz), 3.94 (s, 3 H); MS 257 (M+H)+.
