Procedure

10.0 g (24.0 mmole) of {(2R)-7-nitro-8-[1-propenyl]-2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzo-dioxin-2-yl}methyl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate and 28.0 g (123 mmole) of stannous chloride dihydrate were combined and heated to 70° C. in ethyl acetate (250 mL) for 6 hours under nitrogen. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was poured into ice and was made basic with sodium bicarbonate. It was then extracted with ethyl acetate, washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated to a brown oil. The crude oil was then chromatographed on silica gel with 50% hexane/methylene chloride to remove impurities and the desired product was eluted with 0.5% methanol/CH2Cl2 to give 8.16 g (91%) of the (R)-enantiomer of the title compound as a yellow oil. For analytical purposes, 50 mg of the yellow oil was crystallized from ethanol with the addition of fumaric acid to give the fumarate of the title compound. MS (ESI) m/z 375 (M+H)+.
