Procedure

A mixture of 2,3,4-trichloro-6-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (3.25 g, 13 mmol), iodomethane (1.84 g, 13 mmol), and potassium carbonate (1.79 g, 13 mmol) in dimethylformamide (100 mL) was stirred at 25° C. for 22 hours. The volatiles were removed and the residue purified by column chromatography (15% ethyl acetate in hexane) to provide 2,3,4-trichloro-6-(1-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (1.66 g, 6.3 mmol), mp 138-141° C. and 2,3,4-trichloro-6-(2-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (1.05 g, 4.0 mmol), mp 156-157° C.
