Procedure

A solution of methyl 2-[3-(5-chloro-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)-azetidin-1-yl]-nicotinic acid methyl ester (1.6 g, 4.6 mmol) and water (10 mL) in MeOH (10 mL) at RT was treated with LiOH (414 mg, 9.87 mmol). The mixture was stirred at RT overnight, and made acidic with a 10% HCl solution. The resulting solution was extracted with EtOAc (2×100 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was triturated with hexanes and washed several times with hexanes to give the desired carboxylic acid as a white crystalline solid (1.1 g, yield 71%).
