Procedure
3-Methylbenzaldehyde (21 g, 174.273 mmol) was reacted with nitro methane (967 mL, 174.273 mmol), NaOH solution (6.7 g, 174.273 mmol in 17.32 mL H2O) and ethanol (210 mL) at 0° C. for 2 hours. The reaction mass was quenched using cold 50% HCl solution (60 mL) and extracted using ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 27 g of the product (95% yield).
