Procedure
A mixture of 2-(tert-butyl)phenol (15 g, 0.1 mol), Et3N (37 g, 374 mmol), MgCl2 (14.3 g, 0.15 mol) and paraformaldehyde (20.2 g, 674 mmol) in ACN (200 mL) was heated at reflux for 5 h, cooled, poured into aq. HCl (2N, 200 mL) and extracted with Et2O. The organic layer was concentrated and purified by CC (PE/EA=8/1) to give compound P7a (13 g, 74%) as a colorless oil.
