To a solution of ethyl 5-(hydroxy(phenyl)methyl)-4′-methylbiphenyl-3-carboxylate (230 mg, 0.66 mmol) in 1,4-dioxane (2 mL) and water (1 mL) was added lithium hydroxide (48 mg, 2 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at 60° C. overnight. After cooling, the mixture was acidified with 15% HCl (aq.) to pH=5, and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was dried and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound as a white solid. 1H NMR (300 MHz, acetone-d6): 8.14 (t, 1H, J=2.0 Hz), 8.09 (m, 1H), 7.97 (m, 1H), 7.60-7.47 (m, 4H), 7.37-7.19 (m, 5H), 6.00 (s, 1H), 2.37 (s, 3H).
