To a stirred solution of methyl 3-bromo-5-vinylbenzoate (1.6 g, 6.6 mmol) and N-methylmorpholine N-oxide (2.0 g, 17.1 mmol) in acetone (40 mL) and water (10 mL) was added dropwise a 5% solution of osmium tetraoxide in water (0.50 g, 0.10 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 3 h, and then a saturated aq. Na2S2O3 solution was added. After being stirred for 30 min, the reaction mixture was extracted with EtOAc (100 mL×3). The combined organic layers were washed with water and brine, dried, and concentrated. The residue was purified by flash column to afford the title compound.
