Procedure
A solution of cyclopent-3-en-1-ylmethanol (3.50 g, 35.66 mmol) in anhydrous dimethylformamide (100 mL) at 0° C. was added sodium hydride (60% dispersion in mineral oil, 1.71 g, 42.79 mmol) portionwise under nitrogen. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 1 hour and then stirred at ambient temperature for 1 hour. para-Methoxybenzyl chloride (5.80 mL, 42.79 mmol) was added to the reaction mixture and the resulting mixture was stirred for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was quenched with methanol (10 mL) and then water (200 mL). The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic layer was washed with saturated ammonium chloride (2×200 mL) and brine (200 mL); dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate; filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (3:1 hexanes:ethyl acetate) to provide the title compound (6.15 g, 79%): 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.26 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 6.87 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 5.67-5.60 (m, 2H), 4.44 (s, 2H), 3.79 (s, 3H), 3.34 (d, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 2.66-2.40 (m, 3H), 2.16-2.03 (m, 2H); MS (ES+) m/z 241.2 (M+23).
