Procedure
To a mixture of cyclohexenylmethanol (2.50 g, 22.3 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (40 mL) and sodium hydride (60% dispersion in mineral oil, 0.89 g, 22.3 mmol) was added in portions at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 0.5 hour, then added 1-(chloromethyl)-4-methoxybenzene (3.49 g, 22.3 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred for another 0.5 hour and quenched with slow addition of water (50 mL). The organic layer was extracted with ethyl acetate (80 mL) and concentrated in vacuo to dryness. The residue was purified by column chromatography with ethyl acetate in hexanes (10%) to afford the title compound as a colorless liquid (3.50 g, 68%).
