To a solution of (5-bromoquinolin-8-yl)methanol (8.0 g, 33.6 mmol) in methylene chloride (120 mL) were added pyridinium p-toluenesulfonate (844 mg, 3.3 mmol) and 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran (6.1 mL, 67.2 mmol) and stirred at RT for 16 h. The reaction mixture was diluted with water, extracted with methylene chloride, dried with magnesium sulfate and concentrated. Purification by MPLC (20% ethyl acetate in hexanes) afforded 13.9 g of the title compound as a colorless oil.
