Procedure
To a mixture of 2-bromophenol (10.0 g, 57.8 mmol, 1.0 equiv), paraformaldehyde (8.67 g, 5 equiv) in isopropanol (80 mL) was added tert-butylamine (21.1 g, 5 equiv) dropwise. The resulting reaction mixture was stirred at 67-70° C. under nitrogen for 1.5 hours. The reaction mixture was then cooled to room temperature and concentrated under reduced pressure to give a yellow oil. The yellow oil was purified by column chromatography to give 8-bromo-3-(tert-butyl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[e][1,3]oxazine (9 g) as yellow oil.
