Procedure

Aniline (2.03 g, 25.0 mmol) was dissolved in CH2Cl2 (30 mL). To the solution were added pyridine (2.22 mL, 27.5 mmol) and decanoyl chloride (5.25 g, 27.5 mmol) in an ice bath. After stifling for 3 h at room temperature, the reaction mixture was poured into 1M HCl (30 mL) and the mixture extracted with CH2Cl2 (3×100 mL). The organic extracts were washed with water (50 mL), brine (50 mL), dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated to give 5.62 g (22.8 mmol, 91%) of N-phenyldecanamide as a white solid, mp 65-66° C. (lit5 mp 65-66° C.); 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 0.87 (t, 3H, J=6.9 Hz), 1.26 (m, 12H), 1.72 (m, 2H), 2.35 (t, 2H, J=7.8 Hz), 7.10 (t, 2H, J=7.8 Hz), 7.31 (t, 1H, J=7.8 Hz) 7.50 (t, 2H, J=7.9 Hz); 13C NMR (75 MHz, CDCl3) δ 13.9, 22.5, 25.7, 29.2, 29.2, 29.3, 29.3, 31.7, 37.5, 120.1, 124.0, 128.7, 138.1, 172.3.
