To a solution of (R)-dimethyl 2-hydroxysuccinate (140 g, 0.86 mol) in THF (1400 mL) was added dropwise Me2S.BH3 (86 mL, 10 M) at 20° C. over 30 min. The mixture was stirred at 20° C. for 30 min. NaBH4 (1.63 g, 42.9 mmol) was added at 10° C. and stirred at 10° C. for 30 min. The mixture was warmed to room temperature and stirred for 1 h. CH3OH (200 mL) was slowly added to the mixture while cooling in an ice-water bath. The resulting mixture was evaporated to give (R)-methyl 3,4-dihydroxybutanoate (130 g, crude).
