A mixture of 3-bromo-2-hydroxymethyl-4-methylpyridine (5.8), cysteamine hydrochloride (3.5 g) and hydrobromic acid (48%, 50 ml) was refluxed for 6 hours and evaporated to dryness. The residue was crystallised from isopropanol/methanol to give 2-(3-bromo-4-methyl-2-pyridylmethylthio)ethylamine dihydrobromide (8.5 g) m.p. 203°-205°.
