Procedure

A solution of 5.45 g of 3-aminophenol and 11.6 g of 1-bromooctane in 250 ml of dioxane is stirred at 100° C. for 80 hours, the solvent is then evaporated, and the residue is then taken up in toluene/ethyl acetate (10:1) and chromatographed on silica gel, giving N-octylaminophenol as beige crystals, melting point 75° C.
