Procedure

A mixture of methyl 2-bromo-3-[4-[2-(5-methyl-2- phenyl-4-oxazolyl)ethoxy]phenyl]propionate (15.0 g), 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]-7-undecene (DBU) (6.2 g) and toluene (200 ml) was stirred for 2 hours at 70° C. The reaction mixture was poured into ethyl acetate (200 ml), which was washed with 2N HCl and a saturated aqueous saline solution, followed by drying (MgSO4). The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure to leave methyl 4-[2-(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolyl)ethoxy]cinnamate (10.8 g, 88%). Recrystallization from ethyl acetate-hexane colorless needles, m.p.114-115° C.
