To a solution of (RS)-1-(3-methoxy-benzenesulfonyl)-2-oxo-3-phenyl-imidazolidine-4-carboxylic acid methyl ester (0.043 g) in tetrahydrofuran (0.5 ml) and methanol (0.5 ml) was added a 1 M aqueous NaOH solution (0.13 ml) at 0° C. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 30 min. 1 M HCl (0.15 ml) was added and the organic solvents were evaporated. The colorless precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried to give (RS)-1-(3-methoxy-benzenesulfonyl)-2-oxo-3-phenyl-imidazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (0.040 g) as a colorless solid.
