Procedure

Potassium t-butoxide (7.7 ml, 1M in THF, 7.7 mmol) was added to a solution of methyl 2-[2,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]acetate (2 g, 7 mmol) in THF at 0° C. The resulting yellow solution was stirred for 40 min. n-Propyl iodide (1.7 g, 10.5 mmol) was added and the mixture stirred for 1 h. The mixture was poured onto HCl (2M) and extracted into EtOAc. The combined organic phases were washed with Na2S2O3 solution, brine, then dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo to give the product as a yellow oil (2 g, 87%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 0.92 (3H, t, J 7.3), 1.23-1.29 (1H, m), 1.35-1.43 (1H, m), 1.67-1.81 (1H, m), 2.05-2.17 (1H, m), 3.69 (3H, s), 4.10 (1H, t, J 7.5), 7.62 (1H, s, J 8.2), 7.78 (1H, d, J 8.2), 7.90 (1H, s).
