PROCEDURE

A mixture of the above ester (0.80 g, 0.0019 mol), ethanol (5 ml), tetrahydrofuran (5 ml) and 4 N sodium hydroxide (4 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 22 h. Water (50 ml) and concentrated hydrochloric acid (2 ml) were added and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (2×20 ml). The combined organic extracts were washed with brine (10 ml), dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo. This gave 0.8 g of a solid, which was triturated and washed with ethyl acetate (2×5 ml). Drying in vacuo, afforded 0.6 g (75%) of the title compound as a solid.
