Trifluoroacetic acid (3 mL, 38.9 mmol) was added to a solution of bis(1,1-dimethylethyl) [2-fluoro-4-nitro-3-(phenyloxy)phenyl]propanedioate (2.210 g, 4.94 mmol) in dichloromethane (20 mL). The mixture was heated at 45° C. overnight. The reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate and the solvent was evaporated to give the crude product (1.59 g, 89% yield) as a gummy solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, chloroform-d) δ ppm 7.70-7.80 (m, 1H), 7.20-7.33 (m, 3H), 7.07 (t, 1H), 6.89 (d, 2H), 3.78 (s, 2H).
