Procedure
To a suspension of NaH (1.44 g, 36 mmol) in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran was added 4-chloro-2-(1-chloro-2-methylpropan-2-yl)phenol (721) (6.6 g, 30.0 mmol) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 1 hour. The reaction was quenched with methanol, diluted with water, and extracted with ether. The ethereal extract was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel to give 5-chloro-3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran (722).
