4-(1-(2-(Trifluoromethyl)phenylsulfonyl)piperidin-2-yl)butanoic acid methyl ester (3.5 g, 8.9 mmol, 1 eq.) was dissolved in water (25 ml) and methanol (35 ml). Lithium hydroxide (1 g, 44.5 mmol, 5 eq.) was added, while stirring. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 24 h.
