A mixture of 2-[2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-1,3-thiazol-5-yl]-1,1-dimethoxypropan-2-ol (1.58 g), 1M hydrochloric acid (5 ml) and acetone (15 mL) was stirred overnight at 60° C. To the reaction mixture was added saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with saturated brine, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The obtained residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography, and the title compound (0.94 g, yield 71%) was obtained as colorless crystals from a fraction eluted with ethyl acetate-hexane (4:1, volume ratio). melting point 98-99° C.
