To a solution of 3-[2-(2-methoxy-ethoxy)-phenyl]-3-oxo-propionic acid ethyl ester (0.5 g, 1.88 mmol) in 2-methoxyethanol (5 mL) was added thiourea (0.22 g, 2.8 mmol) and K2CO3 (0.28 g, 2 mmol). The reaction mixture refluxed 3 h. After cooling, a mixture poured into water (10 mL) and adjusted to pH 3 with concentrated HCl. A precipitate formed that was filtered and washed with water and diethyl ether to obtained 0.315 g (60%) 6-[2-(2-methoxy-ethoxy)-phenyl]-2-thioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrimidin-4-one as a cream solid.
