Procedure
Phenol (24.28 g, 0.25 mol), potassium carbonate (39.2 g 0.28 mol), and ethyl 2-bromoproionate (46.7 g, 0.25 mol) were combined in acetone (200 mL) and stirred at room temperature over night. The acetone was removed in vacuo, the residue was purified in silica to provide a golden oil (50 g, 90%), Rf=0.80 in 10:1 ethyl acetate: petroleum ether.
