Sodium hydride (60% in mineral oil, 12 mg, 0.296 mmol) was added at room temperature to a solution of 3-benzyl-3-(1H-indole-5-carbonyl)-pyrrolidine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (100 mg, 0.247 mmol) in DMF (3 mL). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 20 minutes, and then methyliodide (18 μL, 0.296 mmol) was added. The reaction mixture was then stirred for 30 minutes, then quenched by addition of water and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic extracts were washed with water and brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and evaporated under reduced pressure to give 105 mg of 3-benzyl-3-(1-methyl-1H-indole-5-carbonyl)-pyrrolidine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester as a white foam that was used without further purification.
