A mixture containing 5-chlorobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxaldehyde (Matsunaga Bioorg. Med. Chem. 2004, 12, 2251), malonic acid (1.4 equiv), pyridine (2.5 equiv) and piperidine (0.1 equiv) was heated at 110° C. for a period of 4 h. The reaction mixture was cooled, poured into H2O and filtered to provide the title compound.
