Procedure

To a mixture of 1-benzothiophene-2-carbaldehyde, malonic acid (1.5 equiv) and pyridine (2.5 equiv) was added piperidine (0.1 equiv). The mixture was heated to reflux for 6 h, cooled and poured into H2O and filtered. Air drying over night gave the title compound.
