Procedure

A solution of ethyl 5-tert-butyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-carboxylate (0.21 g, 1.0 mmol) and lithium hydroxide hydrate (42 mg, 1.0 mmol) in THF (2 mL) and water (2 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. The solvent was removed under vacuum to give lithium 5-tert-butyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-carboxylate (0.2 g) as a white solid which was used without further purification.
