Procedure
N-[[6-Methoxy-5-(trifluoromethyl)-1-naphthalenyl]carbonyl]carbamic acid, methyl ester (2.2 g, 6.72 mmol) was added to a suspension of sodium hydride (60% in oil, 0.29 g, 7.25 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (anhydrous, 150 mL) and the mixture stirred for 1.5 hours at 20° C. tert-Butyl bromoacetate (1.20 mL, 7.40 mmol) was added and the resultant solution was stirred for 20 hours at 20° C. The solvent was evaporated and the residual solid triturated with hexanes (3×20 mL), to yield the pure product (2.1 g, 71.2%) as a white crystalline solid.
