Procedure

A mixture of 10.33 g of N-[3-[3-(dimethylamino)-1-oxo-2-propenyl]phenyl]cyclopropanecarboxamide and 1.92 g of 60% sodium hydride in oil in 50 ml of dimethylformamide was stirred for one hour under argon, then cooled in an ice bath. A solution of 0.81 g of methyl iodide in 10 ml of dimethylformamide was added dropwise. The mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 0.5 hour and extracted three times with hexane. The mixture was diluted with water and this mixture extracted with dichloromethane. This extract was evaporated and the residue crystallized from hexane, giving 10.17 g of the desired compound, mp 120°-122° C.
