Procedure
A mixture containing 1.6 g of 1,1-dimethoxy-1-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)prop 2-yl methanesulfonate, 1.5 g of sodium bicarbonate, 10 ml of water and 10 ml of methanol is heated at 70° C. with refluxing for 11/2 hours. Then the reaction mixture is cooled and poured into water and extracted with ether. The ethereal extract is dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated under reduced pressure to yield 1.07 g of 2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid.
