To a solution of methyl-5-bromo-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylate (10.0 g, 43.1 mmol) and cesium carbonate (16.9 g, 51.7 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (144 mL) was added 3-bromo-2-butanone (7.8 g, 51.7 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature. After 20 min, saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate and water were added. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×). The combined organic extracts were washed with water (3×), brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. Purification by silica gel chromatography (100% dichloromethane→50% dichloromethane/ethyl acetate) gave the title compound. MS 302.1 (M).
