Sodium hydride (60%, 33 mg, 0.83 mmol) was added to a solution of 7-chloro-2,3-dimethyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-c]pyridine (100 mg, 0.53 mmol) prepared in Step 1 in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (2.8 ml). The reaction mixture was stirred for 30 minutes at room temperature. 1-Iodo-2-methylpropane (64 μl, 0.67 mmol) was added to the reaction mixture, which was then stirred overnight at room temperature. Water was added to the reaction mixture, which was then extracted with dichloromethane. The organic layer was dried on anhydrous magnesium sulfate and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified with silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/n-hexane=1/9, v/v) to give 108 mg of the titled compound as a white solid. (Yield: 86%)
